West Oakland Youth Yearn to be Employed, Entertained

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Young people in West Oakland say that more jobs and recreational programs might reduce violence in their community.

One hundred young people were surveyed by Oakland Youth Movement, a program of the Alameda County Health Department. Three-quarters of them said that the lack of jobs, job training and recreational programs lead them to drugs, or violence.

Oakland City Council Member Nancy Nadel says a new teen center is being opened on Market Street, and Youth Radio is offering job training this summer.

”It’s a great new resource for our young people. They can actually learn how to be on the microphone, or learn the technology behind it. They can also get paid internships while they’re there,” said Nadel.
