OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- About 200,000 Oakland residents will soon be getting a one-month credit from their trash company to make up for shoddy service during July’s trash hauler lockout.
Mayor Ron Dellums announced the reparations agreement with Waste Management of Alameda County today. The company said it has already given credit to customers who complained about the lack of service during the contract dispute, but now the rest will see a credit on their next bill.
"I think that's refreshing news for a lot of the people in Oakland," said Mayoral Spokesman Paul Rose. "As their trash piled up they were concerned about their welfare and their health and that's something we wanted to resolve with this one-month credit."
Waste Management is working out another deal for customers who were affected in Castro Valley and Hayward. Under the new five-year contract, there will be no strikes by workers or lockouts by Waste Management.
