Winter Arrives In the Sierras

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (KCBS)  -- The staff at some Northern California ski resorts awoke to an early snow storm that put chain restrictions into effect on parts of Highway 50.

Near the Sacramento Valley and the Lake Tahoe Basin, traffic was held from Twin Bridge to Meyeres, according to Caltrans, with motorists advised to use an alternate route. Chain restrictions went into effect over Echo Summit, with many motorists being barred from crossing the road.

The weather prompted one-way traffic controls at various locations along Highway 50 in the South Lake Tahoe area, but was good news for resorts preparing for the winter season.

“We are in the middle of a true winter storm. We’ve got about five inches on the ground, and it just keeps on snowing. There is no end in sight,” said Russ Pecoraro, a spokesman for Heavenly Ski Resort.

“It’s more of a snow that gets people excited about the season,” he said. “It’s great to have it this early.”
