SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- After months of debate and potential candidates shying away from the race, it appears San Francisco's progressives are starting to rally behind a challenger to Mayor Gavin Newsom.
Quintin Mecke has picked up several endorsements from San Francisco's liberal political establishment. Supporters include The San Francisco Bay Guardian and the Harvey Milk Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Democratic Club.
Mecke even has two supporters on the board of supervisors, Chris Daly and Ross Mirkarimi.
”This is a campaign about ideas, about real issues that are impacting the lives of everyday San Franciscans, while the incumbent mayor is missing in action,” said Mecke.
He admits his biggest challenge will be name recognition, but says this is a chance for progressives to make a stand.
”There’s going to be a movement towards really defining what progressive is, and that’s what we’re trying to do, remind folks about what San Francisco is at its core,” said Mecke. “I think that we should be pushing a forward conversation, especially given the national situation.”
Mecke currently directs the Safety Network Partnership anti-crime program.
