Lust, Caution
|
(NC-17)
Set in Japanese occupied China during World War II, Ang Lee's latest film fully immerses us in another time and place. The espionage epic drama stars Tang Wei as an idealistic student who gets involved with a group of politically-minded actors. Their activism leads to a murder plot involving an anti-Resistance Chinese politician (Tony Leung.) The seduce-and-destroy mission Wei embarks on soon becomes complicated and explosive. Their sexual scenes are used to document the relationship between the characters, the journey of their love affair as it goes from cruelty to warmth. The supporting cast is pitch perfect, including Joan Chen as an observant wife. Period detail, cinematogrpahy, storytelling all combine to make this among the best of Lee's work. In Chinese, but easy to understand and connect for all adults.
