SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Hundreds of angry emails are pouring into the Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco, after Archbishop George Niederauer gave communion to two members of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
A video on You Tube shows Niederauer administering the Eucharist to two men who approached wearing bizarre makeup and costumes, including one dressed in a parody of a nun's habit. It happened during a visit to Most Holy Redeemer Church in the Castro earlier this month.
The archbishop has apologized for his failure to recognize the demonstration by the gay activists. He said the actions of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are "deeply offensive".
An archdiocese spokesman said this is the first time Archbishop Niederauer had seen the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in person since arriving in San Francisco 18 months.
