Oakland Aims to Fight Violence with Employment

JobfairOAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums hopes to reduce violence by nudging more young people into jobs. A job fair in Oakland over the weekend drew crowds of youth looking for employment.

”Any kind of job, construction work on a house, or working at Safeway, anything just to get some money in my pocket,” said Martice Anderson, a job fair visitor.

The theory is, that the more people who have steady jobs, and their own income, the fewer who are likely to steal, or sell drugs to make a living.

”We really want to put people on that path, not only towards employment and a career, but towards home ownership,” said Paula Simmons of Youth Uprising in East Oakland.

Prospective employers included the City, and Port of Oakland, Kaiser Permanente and several trade unions.
