Seven supervisors and the mayor are now behind a plan for the city to issue its own identification documents to city residents regardless of their immigration status.
Critics have assailed the bill authored by Supervisor Tom Ammiano as a threat to national security and an enterprise the city simply cannot afford.
Ammiano counters that issuing identification to undocumented residents will actually make the public safer. He also said fees would charge for the cards would limit the city’s out-of-pocket expenses to less than a million dollars required to start the program.
