Report: CA Rehab Counselors Wanting
|
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Many state substance abuse counselors lack necessary skills, training and education, according to a report released today by a Danville-based non-profit.
The Justin Foundation, which was started by Kathy Smith after her son died in an accident at a rehab center, conducted the study. The report recommends the state enact stiffer regulations for counselors.
"Rehab with unskilled counselors can be harmful and in some cases deadly," said Smith.
Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier has introduced a bill that addresses the issue, and a hearing is scheduled for next week. "Since we are in the bottom five percent of states in terms of standards of care and licensing and oversight, this is a first step," he said.
Those opposed to the legislation argue that tougher requirements will negatively affect the number of people willing to help people through rehab.
