Rabid Bat Found in Pleasanton

bat in flightPLEASANTON, Calif. (KCBS)  -- A bat found in the driveway of a Pleasanton home has tested positive for rabies. The animal is not believed to have come into contact with humans or other animals, but officials are warning area residents that other bats in the same colony could be infected.

"Sometimes if there's one bat that has rabies there might be others in the colony that are sick," said Daniel Wilson of the Alameda County Vector Services District.

"As far as we know there has been no human contact and residents were fairly aware so they didn't touch it. There's always the remote possibility that a cat has been out there playing with it. You know how cats are," said Wilson. "If you see cats playing with bats or if you see sick bats, just don't have any contact. Call your local animal control or call us and we'll come out and pick it up."

Wilson also said the incident should remind pet owners to get their animals vaccinated against rabies.
