Search for Castro Shooting Suspect a Struggle

Castro district on Halloween

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- There appears to be some disagreement among officers in the San Francisco Police Department over just who was behind the shooting Halloween night in the Castro District that left several people injured.

KCBS reporter Barbara Taylor said the police chief, Heather Fong, has played down the notion that the shooting that left nine people injured, was gang related. She repeatedly said it was just two groups of young people who got into a fight.

But Wednesday a field operations chief told Castro area merchants that rival gangs were responsible for the violence.

Supervisor Bevan Dufty said that he warned Chief Fong much earlier on Halloween evening that a half-dozen gangs were roaming the streets and that help was needed. "In my opinion I think it was unfortunately the gang activity that was the dominant problem," he said.

San Francisco police are still trying to piece together exactly what happened before, during and after the Castro district Halloween shooting.

The search for a suspect is overwhelming with numerous different descriptions of the shooter coming in. Police are having a tough time pinpointing one person and then matching a name to a face.

In the chaos that followed the spray of bullets, getting a look at the shooter probably wasn’t first on everyone’s minds. People dove for cover and ran for their lives Police Spokesman Neville Gittens said he hopes someone caught the incident on film.

"A lot of people were shooting pictures that night, a lot were shooting video. The question becomes did anybody think to capture this on video? It would be great if they did. We would appreciate any calls with regards to that," Sgt. Gittens said.

Nine people were wounded by gunfire and one woman was hurt when she fell while trying to get away Halloween night.
