Surfers Join in Oil Spill Clean-up Effort
|
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Some San Franciscans with a special relationship to the ocean are helping clean up Ocean Beach after this week’s large oil spill. Surfers who would normally be in the water walked the beach today.
"A couple friends and I have been just walking the high tide line and picking up the tar, getting it off the beach," said John.
Since the spill in the Wednesday, when a cargo ship scraped a Bay Bridge support tower, oil has been washing up on beaches as far as 40 miles away.
"Some of what I picked up were just globs of oil, some small, some large, like a fist. And then a lot of clumps of feathers and algae, seaweed, that are all covered in it," said Emily.
San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty said the city’s Department of Emergency Management will gladly help facilitate anyone who wants to join the clean-up effort. "We live in an area where people care and they care greatly about the bay," he said.
