Gloves Come Off in State Senate Debate

MigdenSAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Three democratic contenders for California’s third district state senate seat met in San Francisco yesterday for a debate. Senator Carole Migden is working to fend off challenges from Assemblyman Mark Leno, and San Francisco Police Commission Member Joe Alioto Veronese.

Migden went on the offensive, saying her legislative record is superior to Leno’s.

”Mr. appropriations chair got three bills signed this year, that’s the lowest ever heard of for an appropriations committee chairman. I got 12 signed with no big assignments,” said Migden.

Leno told the crowd that he was not running for office as a personal attack on Migden.

”It’s allowing voters to have a choice. The senator has said repeatedly ‘I should be unopposed,’ that is where we disagree significantly,” said Leno. “She says I’m coming after her job, but I don’t think it’s her job.”

And Alioto Veronese said that the district is better served with a wide range of choices.

”I’m the better candidate, that’s why I’m running,” said Alioto Veronese. “I think this entire district deserves better representation.”
