OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- Hundreds of Darfur activists gathered in Oakland today to put pressure on China to stop backing a Sudanese government they say is responsible for genocide. The rally featured a symbolic Olympic torch relay that was intended to shine a spotlight on mass killings that have happened through history.
”Some buildings still are bombarded or bombed by the government,” said Mohamed Suleiman, a native of northern Darfur, who now lives in the Bay Area. “This last October they completely burned the town of Haskanita down.”
Suleiman said today’s protest is tied to China's hosting of the 2008 Summer Olympics. He says China is the largest foreign investor in Sudan as well as a major weapons provider for that country.
Four years of conflict in Darfur have killed at least 200,000 people, and left more than two million others homeless.
