Scientists Debate Climate Change

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Shielding the earth from the suns rays may be possible in the future.

Scientists meeting in San Francisco are discussing new ways to combat global warming.

The experts warn that we are in fact inching closer to a climate catastrophe because of global warming. "Emissions of carbon dioxide are increasing faster than anybody anticipated," explained Ken Caldeira with the Carnegie Institution on Global Ecology. "Concentrations of greenhouse gases are higher today than anybody had foreseen."

According to Caldeira, it is possible to lower the planet's temperature quickly by placing particles in the stratosphere to deflect sunlight away from earth. "It's clear that we have the technological capability and can do it very rapidly and relatively inexpensively," he offered.

However, Dr. Alan Robock with Rutgers University claims there could be unintended consequences from so-called "bio engineering." "What if Russia wants it a little bit warmer and India wants it cooler?" pondered Robock. "Who decides? We will have geo-engineering wars?"
