UCSF Dean of Medicine Forced Out

KesslerSAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- The dean of the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine has been forced out of his job, and the campus community wants to know why.

Doctor David Kessler sent an email saying the campus chancellor forced him out, after labeling him as a whistle blower, because Kessler discovered a series of financial irregularities when he came to UCSF in 2003.

Kessler’s email followed the announcement of his departure by UCSF’s Chancellor J. Michael Bishop. The two letters confused some recipients.

”It sounded like a traditional email about someone leaving, and then a half an hour later the dean sent an email and said ‘I’ve been trying to fight for all these financial irregularities. I’ve been doing this for a long time. I’ve been asked to resign over the summer, and now I’ve been fired.’ It was pretty shocking,” said one student.

The University says it investigated all of Kessler's claims and concluded the allegations were not sustained. The school says it also has a policy to protect whistle blowers from retaliation.
