UCSF Dean of Medicine to Fight for His Old Job

KesslerSAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- The dean of the U.C. San Francisco Medical School, who was fired last week after a long-simmering dispute with the UCSF Chancellor, is going to try to get his job back.

Chancellor J. Michael Bishop asked Dean David Kessler to resign, but Kessler refused, so the Chancellor let him go. But Executive Vice Dean Keith Yamamoto says that for almost four years, Dean Kessler has been trying to sort out irregularities in the school's books that showed millions of dollars less in the budget.

”I think it would be perfect if he was re-instated,” said Yamamoto. “He will move forward with a grievance about this decision.”

UCSF says it investigated the dean's complaints and found nothing wrong. But Dean Yamamoto says there are multiple sets of budget numbers for the same fiscal years, with seven different totals for one year, in the most extreme case.
