Illegal Immigrants Arrested But Few Problems for Employers
|
SAN JOSE (KCBS) -- Despite tough talk about arresting people who hire illegal immigrants, a new report finds relatively few employers are facing charges.
KCBS’s Matt Bigler says there has been a huge increase in the number of illegal workers being arrested. Nearly 4,900 illegal immigrants have been jailed in the United States in the past year while fewer than 100 employers were arrested.
That imbalance is no accident said Father John Peddigo, director of the Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform in San Jose. "It's not to enforce the laws of immigration but simply to create this very fearful immigrant community," he said.
"I spoke to a group of 100 young immigrant workers and their families and asked how many of them faced fear" when simply walking the street and "out of 100 of them, 80 raised their hand." said Father Peddigo.
The federal government claims it's just finally getting serious about immigration reform.
The number ICE (Immigration Control and Enforcement) arrestes has nearly quadrupled from two years ago.
