SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The Golden Gate National Recreation Area has declared this “Endangered Species Big Year.”
There are 33 endangered species in the GGNRA, which is more than Yellowstone. That includes the San Francisco Garter Snake, the Western Snowy Plover, the Southern Sea Otter, and the San Bruno Elfin Butterfly.
”I mean how fun is it to go out and look at a garter snake? And today we showed the public the Snowy Plover, which is such a beautiful bird,” said Nancy DeStafanis, head of S.F. Nature Education, who leads some of the conservation outings.
Teachers especially, are urged to take part in the tours because if you hook the kids, you stand a much better chance of saving the species.
There's even a contest to see who can actually see the most endangered plants and animals.
