SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- A post office in San Jose shut down for the day Thursday after a mail carrier noticed a suspicious liquid leaking out of a package.
It happened at the Robertsville branch on Branham Lane at 9:30 this morning.
U.S. Postal Service spokesman for northern California Gus Ruiz told KCBS the building was immediately evacuated, and about 90 employees and five customers marched outside.
He says haz-mat teams were quickly on the scene, and determined that the agent was a bromo-benzene, which is used in film processing, and while it's not corrosive, it's an airborne agent that "could be dangerous," said Ruiz.
Experts recommended that the building be closed for precautionary reasons for the rest of the day, and cordoned off. It will re-open with normal business hours Friday morning.
Ruiz said the Robertsville branch delivers about 200,000 pieces of mail daily, but most of the mail is sorted by machine, so some 125,000 letters are being delivered today. The remaining 75,000 larger pieces will be delivered tomorrow instead.
