SFSU Expansion Plans Worry Neighbors

San Francisco, Calif. (KCBS)  -- A new master plan proposing a major expansion of San Francisco State University is raising eyebrows among residents of the surrounding neighborhood and members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

The university is expecting its student population to grow substantially over the next 15 years to beyond the school's capacity.

Plans call for adding new housing, buildings,a conference center and a 250-room hotel.

All of the growth has some residents of Lake Merced nervous and Supervisor Sean Elsbernd, who represents the area, said they have good reason to be. "If you go out to Park Merced right now, particularly at 1:30 in the afternoon, you are not going to find a parking space. At 19th and Holloway, the gateway to San Francisco, is one of the most dangerous intersections in the city because of the heavy vehicular traffic," he said.

Elsbernd said the proposed expansion would only make matters worse.

Because the university is a state facility it can bypass the city's planning process.

City supervisors are asking the university to voluntarily to work with city planners to make sure the project does not have an adverse impact.
