FOSTER CITY, Calif. (KCBS) -- Former state Senator Jackie Speier is off and running for the seat held by longtime Representative Tom Lantos, who is calling it quits after nearly three decades in Congress. Hundreds of supporters joined her in Foster City Sunday for her campaign kick-off.
The event had a fourth of July feel, with a jazz band, red white and blue balloons, and dozens of local politicians, free hotdogs, kids and dogs along the waterfront at Leo J. Ryan Park.
”I can think of no better place to announce my candidacy for the 12th congressional district of the California to the US House of Representatives than right here,” said Speiers.
Leo J Ryan Park is memorialized for Congressman Leo Ryan, who was killed 30 years ago investigating human rights violations in Guyana. Speier was a congressional staffer for Ryan, and ran unsuccessfully for his seat years ago.
Now, she will seek to replace long time representative Tom Lantos, a holocaust survivor, recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer, who is not seeking re-election.
”All our best hopes are with Tom and Annette and his family, as he engages in yet another struggle. God bless him,” said Speiers.
No other candidates have announced a run for the seat.
