SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Dozens of Bay Area cities failed to make a passing grade in protecting residents from secondhand smoke, according to a new study released Tuesday by the American Lung Association.
73 of the 108 Bay Area cities included in the study earned "F" grades, with San Jose earning a "C" grade and San Francisco earning a "D" grade.
In contrast, the six cities that received an outstanding "A" grade were Belmont, Berkeley, Oakland, Ross, Emeryville and unincorporated areas of Contra Costa County.
The report graded cities on policies to reduce secondhand smoke in outdoor dining and service areas, recreation areas, entryways and housing. Unfortunately, the results were far from satisfactory.
The biggest issue, however, is protecting residents of multi-unit apartment buildings and condo complexes.
