SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom Friday endorsed the idea of using the city's rainy day fund to help San Francisco schools weather a $40 million cutback in state funding.
The mayor made his announcement at Mission High School, saying he supports the idea of transferring $30 million to schools, according to San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Carlos Garcia.
The district was set to mail out 500 layoff notices after the governor unveiled a state budget that included massive cuts to education, said Garcia. But the infusion of cash from the city will help the district for the next two years, he added. Garcia believes the state will ultimately need to find a solution to the budget crisis.

The Board of Supervisors must vote on the rainy day fund transfer, and Supervisor Tom Ammiano expects no trouble getting approval.
The city's reserve fund currently stands at $122 million.
