SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Transportation officials are planning to get hundreds of commuters off one of the East Bay's worst bottlenecks by starting a new high-speed ferry service between Antioch and San Francisco.
The first step will be to conduct an environmental impact report.
”We’ve been pursuing funds to pay for the environmental document, and we think we’re probably within six to eight months, or even closer, to getting the funding that would allow us to proceed with this environmental document,” said Steve Castleberry, executive director of the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority.
It is expected that once the ferry service starts, hundreds of commuters will opt to take the hour-plus boat ride, as opposed to driving on highway 4. The Vallejo Ferry ride into San Francisco is 55 minutes long, but the boats are still packed with commuters each day.
If all goes as planned, the service could start by 2012.
