OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- An instructor at Saint Mary's College in Moraga and City College of San Francisco was found murdered Saturday night and an Oakland man has reportedly confessed, Oakland police announced Monday.
The body of John Alfred Dennis, Jr., 59, of Oakland was found shot to death in a car parked at Montara State Beach. The driver of the car, Troy Thomas, 44, of Oakland was arrested.
Thomas admitted to murdering Dennis, said Oakland police officer Roland Holmgren. Thomas and the victim had known each other for 30 years when Thomas was in an outreach program for inner-city youth and Dennis was his mentor, Holmgren said.
Thomas was arrested by a San Mateo County sheriff's deputy checking out a lone car parked at Montara State Beach after 11 p.m. Saturday.
After talking to Thomas, who was in the driver's seat, the deputy noticed an arm protruding from a covering in the back seat and called for backup. Thomas was arrested without incident.
