Famous and Obscure, Book Profiles Unique Bonds of Pet Owners and Their Animals

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Animals touch the lives of both celebrities and ordinary people whom the world rarely bothers to notice.

Author Emily Scott Pottruck decided to explore the unique bonds that people from all walks of life enjoy with their pets, in a book whose proceeds go entirely to benefit local animal rescue organizations.

“I haven’t seen anybody who hasn’t really benefited from animal love,” Pottruck told KCBS reporter Patti Reising.

Small wonder then that Robin Williams and Peter Coyote share the pages of her book, Tails of Devotion, with people like Sherrie Franklin, a volunteer at one of those organizations.

“I wanted to honor those people that either spend their professional time helping people and helping the animals, or people who volunteer their time,” Pottruck said.

Besides the adorable pet pictures one might expect, Pottruck also features letters and even music people have written to their pets.

Musician Mickey Hart and conductor Michael Tilson Thomas are also among the well-known pet owners profiled by Pottruck.

All of the proceeds from the book will be donated to five Bay Area animal rescue organizations.
