U.C. Davis Opens Dog Blood Donor Program

DAVIS, Calif. (KCBS)  -- U.C. Davis Veterinary Hospital saves lives every day and now, your family pet can be part of it.

Until now, the hospital kept a set of dogs as donors. Now, it's asking for dog blood donors from the community, especially from police dogs.

About 1,200 pet dogs and canine officers will be screened during the coming year to develop a group of 300-400 regular blood donors. The new program of the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine is the largest of its kind west of the Mississippi.

Each year, 200-300 dogs receive blood transfusions at the teaching hospital for conditions ranging from surgical complications to kidney failure.

Donor dogs must be between 1 and 8 years old, weigh at least 55 pounds and have never been pregnant or had puppies.
