SAN MATEO, Calif. (KCBS) - Gas prices are on the rise in the Bay Area, jumping between .25 and .30 cents in the past few weeks alone.
Customers at one San Mateo gas station are filling up for $4.23 per gallon, for regular unleaded.
The marquis at the Shell station at 20th and El Camino is enough to give some people sticker shock. That, of course, assumes the customer is actually looking at the cost before pumping the gas. "I just work here close by and it's on my way, but I'm really surprised at the price, it's really expensive," lamented Santa Clara resident Ravi Peshkar. "Maybe lazy," he explained of his decision to fill up at the station, without even looking at the price. "Since you told me that, I'm going to stop my gas and I'll fill it up later somewhere else."
Other drivers were forced to fill up at the San Mateo Shell station, just to make it across the Bay. "It's $4.23 here, I live over in Fremont, visiting a friend here right next door and I can get gas for about $3.17," explained Paul Malkin. "I'm going to go back and fill up when I get back to Fremont." He put just $10.00 worth of gas in his tank in San Mateo.
Prices within a ten-block radius can vary by as much as .50 cents.
