ALAMEDA, Calif. (KCBS) -- Advanced placement classes and most sports will not be offered at the city’s two high school’s next year, after school officials made major cuts in order to lower the district’s spending by $4.5 million.
Class sizes will also increased from 20 to 35 next September to save money.
Pools at both Alameda High and Encinal High are slated to close after school officials slashed the budget for high school sports by 57 percent, leaving just $200,000 to run 21 varsity sports.
At the end of a painful school board meeting that ended at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, programs like swimming and water polo were almost certain to end unless community donations can salvage some of the extra curricular programs.
The cuts come despite a $120 parcel tax already headed for June ballot.
