SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCBS) -- State lawmakers are considering a bill that would essentially grant disabled parking privileges to new moms and moms to be.
Assembly bill 1940, introduced by Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, R-Irvine, would designate women in their final three months of pregnancy and during the first two months after birth legally disabled, and therefore eligible for a temporary disabled parking placard.
DeVore said it makes no sense to force a pregnant woman, who often struggles to get out of her car and possibly with a toddler in hand, not to be able to used disabled parking spaces.
His proposal is expected to have a tough time in the state legislature. A number of groups oppose the idea including disabled rights groups, the California chapter of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the National Organization of Women. They say pregnancy is not a disability and women should be encouraged to walk more, not less. A similar bill was shelved four years ago.
