SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- One of the world's most elegant cruise ships docked in San Francisco today with an unwelcome passenger on board. Dozens aboard the Queen Elizabeth II have contracted the highly contagious norovirus.

Shortly after the ship departed from South Hampton, England on January 2nd, passengers and crew members began displaying symptoms of the gastrointestinal illness commonly called the stomach flu such as vomiting and diarrhea.

A passenger boarding the ship today told KCBS' Holly Quan that he received a warning letter from Cunard, the company that operates the cruise line, explaining how the ship is being disinfected to prevent further outbreaks.

The norovirus is often found in dining halls and kitchens, so passengers are not being allowed to serve themselves during buffet meals.

As of last week, reportedly only four people were still sick.

A spokesman for Cunard said the 106 day world cruise would not be interrupted because of the virus.

This is the first time since the year 2000 that the Queen Elizabeth has docked in San Francisco.
