Deadly Shooting in Front of a Richmond Church

RICHMOND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- One man was killed and four others injured in a shooting outside a Richmond church Sunday that was hosting a food service program for the homeless.

Richmond Police spokesman Lt. Mark Gagan says a drive-by shooting occurred outside Church of the Living God as a group of volunteers were bringing people off of the street to feed them.

Police say the shots were fired from a red pickup truck and that they don't believe the homeless people and church volunteers were the intended targets.

The slain man, who was homeless, has not been identified. Gagan said three others are seriously injured and one is in critical condition.

"No motive is known for this shooting," said Gagan.  "It's pretty brazen and pretty disturbing, because the person who was killed was standing in front of a church on a Sunday morning.  It's one of those crimes that really makes people wonder why it happened, and wonder what the threat is to the general public.  So we're really trying to find out what the motive was."
