SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) - A major conference on immigration was scheduled to get underway at San Jose State University on Thursday.
Issues expected to be addressed range from farm workers to H1B visas for high tech workers.
The theme of the conference is "From Strawberries to Software, Immigration to Silicon Valley." "What we need to do, have a rational policy, so we have farm laborers that will come in and do that work. Secondly, we have tremendous technology needs in this valley, and issues around how do we get technology workers qualified to be here," explained San Jose State College of Sciences Dean Tim Hegstrom.
More than 150 scholars and community experts from around the country have come to San Jose for the conference. "This is really the place to study immigration," offered Hegstrom . "It's really the second-most diverse place in the country in terms of immigrant communities and languages spoken. So it's a good place for scholars who are interested in this topic."
The panel discussions include one by Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), on U.S. immigration policies.
