SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Travel experts are predicting a problem-plagued summer travel season for airline passengers this year.
With news that United Airlines is cutting 1,100 jobs because of heavy quarterly losses, and Delta and Northwest operating in the red because of high fuel costs, the flying public had better be prepared to add an extra day of travel, according to Roland Rust, professor of the Marketing Department at the University of Maryland.
"I don't see that the summer looks very promising for the consumer," said Rust.
Overbooked flights are expected to create chaos as airlines merge and cut routes, which means you should check in online before you get to the airport, said John Newton, news editor for Travel and Leisure Magazine. The people who get to the airport late are the ones who will likely be bumped from flights, Newton said.
