MARTINEZ, Calif (KCBS) -- The coroner has identified the Martinez cyclist killed riding his bicycle home from school Tuesday afternoon as 13-year-old Tommy Choi.
Choi was wearing a helmet when he was struck at about 3 p.m. on Alhambra Avenue, a busy thoroughfare with a speed limit of 35 mph. The crash happened near the intersection with Shetland Drive, said police Commander Mark Smith.
He sustained major injuries and was rushed to Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez where he died about an hour later, according to a spokesman for the coroner’s office.
The 16-year-old driver of the car that hit the boy remained at the scene of the accident and was cooperative with police, Smith said. She had a valid driver’s license and did not appear to have drugs or alcohol in her system, he said.
The driver has not been cited as authorities investigate who was at fault in the accident.
