Rep. Barbara Lee Urges Blacks to Talk About HIV/AIDS

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Though the HIV/AIDS epidemic has had a profound impact on African Americans, many in the black community don't want to talk about it.

Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, wants to change that. She hosted a panel discussion titled "From Prevention to Policy: Responses to HIV/AIDS in the African-American Community" in Oakland Friday.

Lee wants to expand the reach of HIV prevention programs, develop new intervention strategies, and get the black community behind an effort to battle the epidemic.

For many years, the congresswoman has pressed for a declaration of a national AIDS emergency, but to no avail.
