BART Delays Could Continue Into June

BARTHAYWARD, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Two separate fires at the South Hayward BART yard Saturday caused millions of dollars worth of damage, and could affect train service between Hayward and Fremont until mid-June.

There was no service at all between those stations for hours on Saturday, and again on Sunday. Shuttle buses were used to bridge the gap.

”We will get people to where they are going, but they may be delayed somewhat,” said BART Assistant General Manager Paul Overseer. “We’re asking people on the A-line, particularly the people who get on at stations south of Hayward, to arrive a little bit early and allow an extra 15 minutes for their trip. We’re hoping that the impact on the rest of the system will be negligible.”

While the repair work is underway the Richmond-to-Fremont train will stop at the Bayfair station. And riders looking to go further south toward Fremont will need to transfer to another line.

For many passengers Monday morning it was business as usual, but others did see a longer commute than normal.

”I think the stretch from Union City up to Bayfair messed me up. I was delayed about 15 to 20 minutes,” said one passenger.

The fires broke out while workers were installing an equipment upgrade.
