Protestors Criticize Chevron?s Environmental Record

SAN RAMON, Calif. (KCBS)  -- A number of human rights groups positioned themselves outside Chevron's Corporate Headquarters in San Ramon Wednesday where a shareholders meeting was taking place.

Wearing white hazardous material suits, protesters, who say they represent the group "Amazon Watch," wanted to let the shareholders of Chevron know they are responsible for 18 billion gallons of what they claim is toxic waste from when the oil giant purchased Texaco.

Sean Comey, spokesman from Chevron, says the meeting is a time to hear from people, even those who don't agree with the oil giant.

"As we try to accomplish our core mission, which is to bring energy to people around the world, controversy sometimes results from some of the operation," said Comey.

Dozens of demonstrators waving "Clean Up Chevron" signs protested at the gates, but despite increasingly vocal complaints there were no incidents as police kept a watchful eye on what was going on.
