This panel will deal with the cause and treatments of chemical dependency, eating disorders, addictions and co-dependency. Alta Mira Treatment Programs has assembled a panel of experts for this question and answer forum. Dr. Jim Braly, who will be sharing his passionate expertise on balanced nutrition and sleep hygiene. Dr. Steber will relay his knowledge on addiction and psychological health. Dr. Kenneth Perlmutter will add discussion around the changing family system, and Dr. Amelia Hardwick will speak on integrative medicine and its effectiveness in freeing our society from anxiety and depression.

Every hour children play video games or watch television may double their risk of obesity.  Since 1991 the prevalence of obesity has increased 75 percent in this country, and twice as many children — and three times as many teenagers — are obese today as in 1980.

Childhood obesity is rising at an alarming rate and the incidence of Type2 Diabetes in children has risen significantly in recent years. Children at risk of obesity must be identified very early.  A panel of experts will discuss the childhood obesity crisis and Russell Decker, the Chairman of the Healthy Child Initiative will announce a new program that will screen and test every school-age child in the United States.

"Hip Resurfacing, An Alternative to Traditional Hip Replacement"

Total Hip Replacement is an extremely successful operation for relief of pain and return to near normal function in people with arthritic hips. Traditionally, hip replacement has been performed in the more elderly population, but new techniques and materials are making this procedure more and more attractive to young patients as well, with enhanced longevity and few activity restrictions.

However, Hip Resurfacing may be just the option for the very active patient slowed by hip arthritis. This session is presented by Dr. Christopher Cox,  a board certified Orthopedic Surgeon who has been in practice 16 years, who will explain the benefits of Hip Resurfacing as an alternative to full hip replacement.  Dr. Cox has performed over 2000 hip replacement surgeries.  He is the Medical Director of the Comprehensive Joint Replacement Center at California Pacific Medical Center and is the past president of the Northern California Chapter of the Western Orthopedic Association.

Dietary supplements are a multi-billion dollar industry and an estimated 100 million Americans have either tried them or currently use them.  For most of us, dietary supplements are used to help us stay healthy.  For others, they serve as an alternative to prescription or over-the - counter medicines.  Given the popularity of these products, drug supplement interactions are a concern especially in people taking multiple prescription medicines.

The Walgreens presentation, conducted by UCSF's Dr. Candy Tsourounis, will begin by reviewing the regulations that dietary supplement manufacturers are required to follow.  Supplement purity, potency and issues of contamination labeling will also be reviewed.

A summary of scientific evidence behind select dietary supplements will be presented for glucosamine, chondroitin, zinc lozenges and melatonin.  Practical recommendations regarding drug interactions, monitoring and use will be provided.

Mind Over Bladder: Understanding Female Incontinence

Urinary incontinence (involuntary loss of urine) is a problem that affects over 13 million people in the U.S. and is estimated to affect 50% of women. While it is more common in older women, it affects women of all ages. It is not a normal part of the aging process and you can do something about it.

Janis Luft of the award winning Mind Over Bladder program at UCSF Women’s Continence Center will discuss a comprehensive array of clinical services for women with incontinence, urethral or bladder dysfunction and pelvic support problems. The Center uses a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach that incorporates physicians from gynecology, urology and colorectal surgery as well as nurse practitioners and physical therapists. The most up-to-date treatment options and a range of therapies, many non-surgical, will be reviewed.
