WASHINGTON, D.C. (KCBS) -- Lawmakers in California expressed concern Thursday that the Supreme Court's decision to strike down Washington D.C.'s ban on hand guns could erode the state's gun control laws.
"California has always been a state that recognizes that we have a major firearms problem," said U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D - CA), a longtime advocate of gun control.
Feinestein worries the ruling will spark a landslide of lawsuits against state regulations.
"California has an assault weapons piece of legislation. I suspect that this legislation will now be challenged," said Feinstein.
The National Rifle Association is already gearing up to challenge individual states laws regulating guns.
"The next step in advancing this civil right is to incorporate it through the 14th amendment to the states. In other words, no bill of rights is automatically applied to state and local government," said NRA attorney Chuck Michel.
Michel told KCBS one of the first regulations it will challenge is a San Francisco Housing Authority lease provision prohibiting fire arms on the property.
