SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - A bill authored by San Francisco Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, offering paid sick leave to all workers, has passed the California State Assembly.
“We believe this is good for employers, good for employee morale,” said Ma.
The bill is similar to the San Francisco law passed two years ago. The new state law would be a two-tier system; workers at businesses with 10 or more employees could earn up to 9 to paid sick days a year, while those at companies with 10 or less would be able to earn up to five paid days of leave.
California State Director of National Federation of Independent Business, John Kabateck says Ma’s bill would do more harm than good.
“It clearly will have a devastating opposite effect on the very people she intends to help; working Californians.”
Kabateck says he believes small businesses already operating on thin profit margins would be forced to lay off workers to meet the state mandate.
