SARATOGA, Calif. (KCBS) -- A suspected marijuana grower is dead following a pot raid in the Santa Cruz Mountains above Saratoga Thursday morning, and authorities were looking for two other suspected growers.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department joined with the State Department of Justice’s CAMP Team, or Campaign Against Marijuana Planting, to raid the pot garden just before 8 a.m. Sheriff’s Lieutenant Ed Wise says that officers confronted several armed men, identifying themselves as law enforcement, and then gunshots rang out.
”I don’t know exactly the number of people. I know that one person was shot, and that two other subjects took off. There may be more, we don’t know. But right now we do not have any law enforcement officers injured,” said Wise.
It is unclear if it was an exchange of gunfire, or if the shots came from only one side.
Heavily armed SWAT officers with camouflage and face paint searched the woods Thursday morning, warning nearby residents to stay inside and lock their doors.
