SF's Mission District Gets More Police

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS/BCN)  -- A fatal shooting and two other stabbings near a busy intersection in San Francisco’s Mission District has resulted in larger police presence.

Last Thursday, two people were stabbed and another shot with a BB gun at the intersection of Mission and 20th streets. The very next day, a man was fatally shot in broad daylight at the same intersection.

Mayor Gavin Newsom said that the sudden surge in violence is baffling.

“Four years ago The Mission was very quiet, and we saw a lot of problems in Bay View, and then it just shifts.”

Wasting little time, the San Francisco Police Department increased the number of officers and patrols in the area in hopes to reduce the crime. Operation Impact, a joint-program with the California Highway Patrol, has also promised to send more of its officers to patrol The Mission District as well.

Newsom said that despite the recent tragedies, the city’s overall homicide rate has been down this year with violent crime down 15 percent, compared to last year which was down 10 percent.
