CA Voters Struggle Over Gas Prices

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- The price of gasoline is expected to be a prominent issue in the race for California’s 11th District Congressional seat which Republicans hope to reclaim this year.

The seat is currently held by Democrat Jerry McNerney, who ousted Republican Richard Pombo in 2006. McNerney is running for reelection and said that many people he spoke with are concerned about gas prices.

“I hear a lot about the price of gasoline right now… that’s a very big issue. People want to know what we’re doing about that.”

The republican candidate running against McNerney is Dean Andal whose view on oil drilling differs vastly from his democratic opponent.

“It’s impossible to see prices not rise to much higher than five dollars in the future… if we don’t allow more domestic oil exploration,” said Andal.

However, McNerney said that Congress has given the president the authority to investigate and improve other options.

“For now, in the long term, we’ve improved our fuel efficiency standards… that’ll do far more than any drilling in Alaska.”

California’s 11th District includes parts of Santa Clara County, Contra Costa County, Alameda County and the San Joaquin Valley. National Analysts have said that this race will likely be a “toss-up” as voters span from the suburbs to the rural farming communities in the Central Valley.
