REDDING, Calif. (KCBS/AP)  -- President Bush arrived in Redding early Thursday afternoon where he was welcomed by Gov. Schwarzenegger.

The President and the governor are scheduled to take an aerial tour of the fire damage in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

President Bush announced last week that he would come to the Golden State for a first hand look at wildfires that now consume a majority of the federal government’s firefighting resources.

Hundreds of square miles have burned since a lightning storm sparked dozens of fires. Thousands of National Guard troops have been called in to assist on fire lines all over the state.

Officials say a complex of fires in Butte County is now 80 percent contained. To the south, Forest Service officials say the fire burning near Big Sur is now 61 percent contained.
