Eat Your Way Across America--Without Leaving the Bay Area

Intrepid KCBS reporter Mike Sugerman has figured a way to beat the high cost of travel, and still fill the need for food from faraway places.

His "About the Bay" segment on regional foods served in San Francisco focuses on a few places that serve the goodies you loved when you lived (or traveled) somewhere else.  Here's a list of the places Mike mentioned:

Consider this to be just an appetizer. Check out the forum (below) and share your faves.

Taste of New Orleans on the Peninsula
We like CreoLa on El Camino Real in San Carlos. Get the gumbo and save room for bread pudding. Like going to NOLA without the bugs or humidity.

Angeline's
Hi, If you can't make it to New Orleans, try this place for great French Quarter cooking in Berkeley. Mavis Sare

What, no Philly cheesesteak?
Or NY pizza. (Sorry, but I don't know the best place to get those things.)

Cheesesteak answer
My native Philly friend swears it's Cheese Steak Shop, with several Bay Area locations. They even ship in Amoroso bread from Philly.

Scandanavian Lefse
Nordic House in Oakland has all things Scandanavian, including lefse -- looks like a tortilla but it's made with potatos and is wonderful. As kids, we spread butter and sprinkled sugar and rolled it up, but it can be eaten by itself. Great.

Cajun/Creole
Creola's in San Carlos. As a former Gulf Coast resident Ive searched far and wide for authentic Gulf food. This is the best Ive found in the bay area. Po'boys, gumbo, and my favorite shrimp Bouron street.

Irish --- John Campbell's
John Campbell's Irish Bakery is the only Irish place in town. Open only 9 months on 5625 Geary (20th/21st Aves) in the Richmond. Not only baked items (the scones are to die for) but yummy sandwiches and soups. I go over there 2-3x/week and try something new.

Escape to a little piece of Maine
In Northbeach on Green, or Redwood City on Veterans, you feel like you just turned the corner into a small Maine restaurant serving FRESH Maine Lobster! All the favorites including their exclusive Lobster Gazpacho, all kinds of seafood salads and of course Lobster Rolls! The BEST!
