Small Temblor Shakes Bay Area

earthquake

A small earthquake shook the Bay Area about 3:47p.m. today.

The temblor measured 3.4 on the Richter Scale and was centered two miles southeast of Berkeley, according to the US Geological Survey's website.

Numerous residents from around the Bay called the KCBS newsroom to report the quake.  In addition, about 1800 people also logged on to the USGS website to report the quake, according to Tom Brokaw, a seismologist with the USGS.

No word yet on any damage caused by the quick jolt.  However, traffic in some areas may be affected.

BART spokesman Linton Johnson tells KCBS trains and stations were not damaged by the quake.

But, as a precautionary measure, all trains were stopped for about five minutes for inspection.

The quake, which occurred along the Hayward Fault line, is not uncommon in the Bay Area, according to Brokaw.  He says small quakes similar in magnitude to this one, occur around the Bay nearly once or twice a month.
