SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The city of San Francisco and various non-profits such as Swords to Plowshares and Project Homeless Connect are extending a helping hand to homeless veterans, announced Mayor Gavin Newsom.
A one day event called Veterans Connect will be held Wednesday to offer homeless veterans and their families access to medical treatment, dental care, housing information, food and much more, he said. The outreach, paid for with federal grant money, will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the War Memorial Veterans Building at 401 Van Ness Avenue at McAllister Street.
It is estimated that there are up to 2,000 military veterans who are currently homeless in San Francisco. And veterans groups and the Veterans Affairs Department have already said they expect to see an even bigger surge in homeless vets in the years ahead.
