SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Protestors and counter-protestors gathered on the steps of San Francisco City Hall Wednesday to make their voices heard on the city's sanctuary policy.
The Minutemen Project based in Southern California had said they would take city hall by storm to demand the resignation of Mayor Newsom. But they were outnumbered 20 to one by counter-protestors who support the city's policy of shielding undocumented immigrants from federal authorities.
The furor over the sanctuary policy began when it was learned that the city was housing juvenile offenders in group homes, rather than turning them over to federal immigration agents. Many of those offenders later escaped from those homes. It also came to light that another undocumented immigrant, Edwin Ramos, a young man charged with killing a man and his two sons in a case of mistaken identity, was also shielded by the city during a previous arrest.
Meanwhile, Newsom has put a stop to the controversial practice of protecting juvenile offenders. And no, he won't be resigning. Newsom says the Minutemen is not a group he turns to for advice.
